Keeping cities cool

The timing was great. On an exceptionally warm day, Monday 14 September, the HittePlein (literally Heat Square) opened on campus. Here, techniques are being tested that help keep cities cool. The square is located in The Green Village, a testing ground for urban innovations. Under the square is a reservoir that temporarily stores rainwater after heavy downpours. By allowing this water to evaporate during periods of heat, the temperature does not rise as much. Another revolutionary idea … or well, let’s say a tried and tested concept that deserves a little more attention, is the Nature Inclusive Shed. This shed has a green roof which is great for insects and holds rainwater. Plants that purify water are also demonstrated on the square. The Heat Square nicely adds to the WaterStraat, a testing ground that The Green Village started two years ago to research dealing with excess rainwater in cities.
