International students scammed by fake policemen

Scammers have robbed foreign students in Maastricht of thousands of euros. They called the students by phone, said they were from the police and asked them to download software.

The fake policemen said that the students’ BSN (Social Security) number was used by others. They would have to install special software to protect their personal data. A ‘civilian agent’ even came to the door to help, reports RTV Maastricht. Then their bank accounts were looted.

“Fake policemen have been swindling people nationwide for a few months now,” confirms a spokesperson for the Limburg police.  “But now in one day there were three foreign students at our counter, while they did not know each other. It seems that the swindlers are specifically targeting that group.” (HOP, BB)

The police have tips to combat such scams:

  1. Hang up immediately if they call you
  2. Do not install any software.
  3. Close the door and call 112 if a stranger tries to get in
