International Women’s Day in Delft

On International Women’s Day, March 8th, TU Delft has organised a special event for women on campus, one that explores the world of successful women in the scientific world along with some fun.

Called “Happy Women’s Day”, the event is being organised by the Delft International Student Society (DISS) in association with Studium Generale . “Women’s day celebrations have their own tradition across Europe. In Greece, where I am from, we always go out with friends for lunch or something. The idea is for women to get together, without boyfriends or husbands, and have fun. When we spoke to international students, we realised that this was not the case in every culture. So, we decided to start a special event for international women here, because every woman in the university is special and we know that,” says Mary Panagopoulou, Treasurer, Delft International Student Society.

Kicking off the event will be a talk by Dr. Maria Santofimia, an Assistant Professor at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. “She will talk about how to succeed in the world of research while maintaining a balance between your professional and personal life,” says Panagopoulou. The talks will be followed by a discussion and tea.

After the talk, the event will shed its serious nature and get an instant makeover with the workshop on fashion. All attendees will be given paper and glue and divided into groups. They will then design clothes using the paper. The designers will then have to showcase their masterpieces, by wearing them. In the final round, everyone will vote for the best design, so if you’re a scientist who watches endless hours of FashionTV, here’s your chance to participate in Project Runway.

“We decided on this because we wanted something feminine for the celebration but nothing to do with the kitchen or make-up. This seemed like a great way to have fun.” adds Panagopoulou.

The event will be held on Friday, between 4pm and 6pm at the Blue Room, TU Library. Seating is limited so be sure to RSVP. If you’d like to attend the party, you can email treasurer@diss-online.nl.

Incidentally, Gemeente Delft has also organised a series of events around Women’s Day all across Delft. You can take a look at the itinerary here: http://8maartdelft.info/programma/. The program includes events such as talks in English, a Ladies Night Out, documentary screenings and a City Walk too.
