Sixteen Rotterdam museums and ten galleries will be open until 2 o’clock in the morning during the second annual Museum Night (Museumnacht). A nocturnal visit to a museum is a special experience in itself, but in addition, organizers have also planned a variety of performances and events for the night. Even the staid “Tax & Customs Museum” will be hosting a hip-hop extravaganza, featuring rappers, dj’s, graffiti and break dancing.

The Warehouse Las Palmas located at the Kop van Zuid will host an exhibition called, ‘Deaf03, from Wunderkammer till Meta-base’, organized by V2, the Institute for Instable Media. The theme of Deaf03 is the interaction with art, digital engineering and the society. According to Deaf, “We are living in permanent archive-systems. Behind all our activities in the physical world there is an unreachable archive. In shops people are registered by video surveillance and Internet search machine logbooks register our daily visits to Internet pages. In this way we all contribute to some archive.” The Deaf03 exhibition explores the artistic potential of these developments.

Museum Night participants can also take part in a work of art. For example, a modern variation of the board game “Scotland Yard” will be played and online participants of “Can you see me now?” will be chased by actors from the British theater and media group Blast Theory. Also worth trying is ‘Painstation’, by German Volker Morawe and Tilmann Reiff. Painstation is a response to the virtual reality of PlayStations, in which

players suffer endless virtual pain. The game is derived from the game Pong: missing

the ball really hurts.

Rotterdam Museumnacht 2003, Saturday 1 March from 20.00 p.m. till 02.00 a.m.

Pass (12.50 euro) can be bought in advance at Museum Boijmans van Beuningen or

during the night at participating museums.
