Inspectorate sees mismanagement at ArtEZ University of the Arts

In a damning report on art university of applied sciences ArtEZ, the Inspectorate of Education speaks of mismanagement. There would be neglect of care for students and staff.

The news leaked on Monday via newspaper NRC and the report (in Dutch) published on Tuesday confirms the allegations. The inspectorate’s investigation focused, among other things, on the Fine Art programme at the AKI art academy, where the relationship between the central examining board, management and the Executive Board was allegedly disturbed. According to the report, the board is ‘insufficiently open and transparent, not properly accountable, insufficiently competent and suitable, and insufficiently reflective’.

The Executive Board already saw these conclusions coming. In early January, it was announced that Chair Marjolijn Brussaard was leaving because of a difference of opinion with the Supervisory Board. The Supervisory Board was also criticised for not intervening sufficiently when problems were identified. One of the supervisors is leaving on 1 February.

Year of time

Earlier, the Inspectorate wrote a similar report on TU Delft, whose board vehemently opposed the conclusions. ArtEZ does not. Its own view states that the university recognises the problems ‘broadly’. ‘We fully endorse the urgency,’ it says.

The university has a year to put its house in order. There will be follow-up investigations regardless. (HOP, BB)
