Davide: I haven’t had many girlfriends. I’m not interested in adventures, but have tried to have serious relationships.
Roosmarie: I’ve had three serious boyfriends. They were all Dutch.
Motivation:
Davide: I just wanted to do something different this weekend, with someone I didn’t know. But I wasn’t looking for a new girlfriend.
Roosmarie: I knew Page 4 was looking for Blind Daters and I wanted to meet an international student, because at the TU you hardly get in touch with foreigners.
Preparations:
Davide: Being Italian, I’m supposed to dress quite sharply, so I wore dark clothes and a necklace made by a friend. Also, a friend cut my hair on Friday. It needed to be cut and with the blind date looming, I got it done before Saturday.
Roosmarie: I asked a friend what to wear. She said I should wear something I felt comfortable in. No skirt, because that can look overdressed. And I wore some make-up, I always do, but not too heavy.
First impression:
Davide: She looked Dutch, or Nordic, and she had paid attention to how she looked, wearing an elegant shirt and nice necklace and earrings. She wasn’t wearing any make-up. In Italy, women wear more make-up. But if a girl is nice, she’s also nice without make-up. I really hate heavy make-up.
Roosmarie: He looked likeable and I felt we’d be able to have a nice evening. When we introduced ourselves, I didn’t catch his name though. I still don’t know his name, because I forgot to ask when we parted.
Dinner:
Davide: I didn’t recognise anything on the menu, so Roosmarie explained the dishes to me. We ordered the same dish, something with mashed meat. During dinner, conversation was easy. Roosmarie seemed to be a very interesting girl.
Roosmarie: We talked about many things, and although there were culture differences between us, we agreed on everything.
Movie:
Roosmarie: I liked the movie [The Mexican]. I’d never seen a humorous gangster movie before, so it was a special story.
Davide: When we left the cinema I said: ‘Well, that was a good movie.’ But now I think I’ve seen better. The story wasn’t very deep.
Nightcap:
Roosmarie: We went to De Waag. Davide knew that cafe. He talked a lot, which was fine, because I fumbled for English words. We spoke about politics, cultural differences, brothers and sisters, living situations and movies.
Davide: The cigarette smoke really bothered my eyes, but we stayed till closing time. Outside, we exchanged three kisses and I offered to take her home, with no further purpose in mind, but she declined, saying that it was on the other side of Delft from where I live.
Verdict:
Davide: She’s really nice, but I’m not in love. I’m not the kind of guy that falls in love on the first date. I’d like to see her again though and promised to phone her. Maybe we’ll go see the windmills in Rotterdam. It’s a pity that next week she’s moving to Utrecht and that I’m returning to Italy in July.
Roosmarie: I had a much nicer evening than I’d expected. I gave him my phone number and e-mail address, which I’d written down in advance. From experience, I know guys often lose your number, and if he does, then it’s over for me, so I didn’t need his number. But I don’t think he’ll lose mine, because he tucked it away carefully in his wallet.
