Heidelberg tragedy: one victim dead
The shooting at Heidelberg University yesterday 24 January 2022 left two dead and three injured. One of the dead is the perpetrator himself. The police are unsure about his motive.
In the lecture hall, where about thirty students were present, the 18-year-old biology student started shooting around him with a rifle. Earlier, he reportedly texted his father that people needed to be punished; it is not clear what for. There seems to be no political or religious motive.
Initially, the police reported four injured, but a 23-year-old student later died of her injuries. It is not yet known whether the perpetrator had specific people in mind or whether they were random victims.
It could have ended even worse: the man had much more ammunition with him, which he ultimately did not use. Outside the building, he committed suicide.
He did not have a firearms licence. The man is said to have purchased the firearm abroad. The perpetrator was not known to the police.
