Good meals that won’t cost a bomb

With the holidays fast approaching, here are six good and inexpensive places for ‘poor’ foreign students stuck here for holidays to celebrate with their friends and visiting family members.

Before deciding on where to dine, did you know that there’s an affordable taxi service in Delft for those who want to have a great night out eating and drinking without squabbling over who’s driving home? For only €10, you get picked up and delivered to and from one of the member restaurants of your choice. More details on the ‘Eet taxi’ website.

Le Cafe Restaurant Hathor

Serving delicious, affordable dinners on the corner of Den Haag’s Maliestraat (22) for the past 35 years. Ambiance: Bright and hearty. Food: Different set menus everyday, like Tuesday’s 3-course fish dinner for only €12.50.

Mijn Schoonmoeder Eten en Drinken

Located just 300m from Scheveningen beach, the restaurant’s name translates as ‘My Mother-in-law’s Food and Drinks’. Ambiance: Cozy as the name suggests. Brutus Beer

Bustling, hearty place in Rotterdam, with breathtaking views of the Erasmus Bridge. Ambiance: Scenic views aside, a nice family restaurant. Food: Daily menus, plus its main attraction: unlimited servings of spareribs with Belgian fries and salad for €10.

De Kleine Ondeugd

Cafe Royal

A popular place on the Voldersgracht (10) with an attractive interior. Ambiance: Romantic. Food: The Dutch kitchen’s open for both lunch and dinner. Dinner main courses, served with potatoes and salad, €12.50. Plus a daily special for €7.

Pasta Company

Located 50m from Delft’s Nieuwe Kerk, this big restaurant seats up to 120 guests. Ambiance: In their own words, a “hyper modern” interior. Food: The name says it all. Italian food, plus some other interesting non-Italian dishes, like Yakitori Chicken Noodles. 3-course menus from €12.50.
