‘Global warming limited to two degrees’

Unlike most of his colleagues in the climate and energy sector Prof. Kornelis Blok (TPM) thinks that global warming will be limited to two degrees. On his Kornelis’ Blog website, he explains that most IPCC authors expect a three-degree temperature rise.

He then explains why he is more optimistic than others. According to the Paris Climate Agreement (2015), countries have to adjust their targets for CO2 reductions every five years, and they can only do so upwards. The higher the targets, the smaller the global warming will become. He shows that the targets in Glasgow (2021) were around +2 degrees while they were +2.7 degrees in Paris. It remains to be seen whether all the other countries will indeed keep their promises, but things are moving in the right direction, Blok thinks.

But we are not there yet, he emphasises. And at the upcoming climate summit in Sharm El Sheikh in November, the discussion will have to focus on how the world can still get on the path to +1.5 degrees.
