Of the 43 Vici grants awarded Friday by NWO, four were for TU Delft scientists. Of the 369 applications, 12 percent were honored, slightly more than last year. Utrecht University won the most grants, six.
Two of the Delft grants go to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science. Jan van Gemert is investigating whether it is possible to give AI more prior knowledge, and thus smaller amounts of data.Maksim Kitsak is engaged in so-called network theory, in which he searches for the shortest paths in complex systems such as the internet and biological networks.
The third grant is for Evgeny Pidko at Applied Sciences, who is researching the ‘choreography’ of catalysts in noble metals to make green chemistry more feasible. Fourth, Menno Veldhorst of QuTech is receiving a grant for research on arrays of quantum dots.
The Vici grant of up to 1.5 million euros is intended for ‘very experienced’ scientists. With this money they can expand their research group over the next five years and do innovative research. The Vici grants, along with the Veni and Vidi grants, are part of the NWO Talent Program.
