The fire in the student flat on Van Hasseltlaan last weekend was started deliberately. Owner DUWO has hired security guards to prevent a repeat occurrence.

Due to the fire alert, dozens of students had to temporarily leave their rooms during the night of Saturday to Sunday. The fire brigade quickly got the fire in the emergency stairwell under control.
The location of the fire played a role in this. Intruders opened the door to the emergency stairwell from the outside and then set fire to boxes they had brought with them on the eleventh floor. There are no other flammable materials in the emergency stairwell. There is also a fire-retardant barrier between this stairwell and the apartments. This ensured that the fire remained small and the fire brigade only had to extinguish the boxes.
Renovation
Residents reported to broadcaster Omroep Delft on Monday that they had not heard any alarms. That is correct. Because it was an emergency stairwell, it contains no fire alarms, in accordance with legal requirements, says a spokesperson for student housing provider DUWO. The fire brigade did not consider it necessary to evacuate the entire building.
The student flat on the Van Hasseltlaan is due for renovation. This is planned for 2026. A participation process with the residents is currently underway, says the spokesperson. After that, it will become clear exactly when they will have to leave their homes. During the renovation, the entrance doors to the emergency stairwell will also be replaced, “with the latest technology to optimally keep out unwanted guests”.
To prevent a replay of last weekend’s events, DUWO has hired security guards. They will patrol the area several times a week, especially at weekends, to provide extra surveillance.
