Financial support for study delay

The TU has implemented the advice of the student council to grant financial support to foreign students in special cases. In special cases, regular students % meaning those who receive grants from the Informatie Beheer Groep in Groningen – can receive financial support from the TU.

This occurs when students have been ill for long periods of time, or when they’ve experienced a major delay in their studies because of family affairs.

The TU has also recognised students who hold administrative positions with, for instance, student councils and student unions. If a student fulfills such a function, he or she can also apply for extra financial support.

Previously, these grants weren’t available to foreign students. The TU is not forced by law to provide such support for foreigners, but the student council has proposed that the TU include foreign students in this support system. Although this hasn’t happened yet, the TU has devised another procedure that offers help for foreign students who are following the regular Dutch BA course, as well as for MSc students.

Victor Joosten, a member of the student council: “There are still some regulations in this new system we would like to change. For instance, the support for administrative functions isn’t included. And students who apply should have made progress in their study of at least seventy percent per year.”

When the TU’s board of directors approves the new procedure, the system will be implemented retroactively on the first of September.
