DSC sub-clubs welcome foreign students

Delftsch Studenten Corps (DSC) is one of the oldest and largest student societies in Delft, located on the Phoenixstraat in a three-story, neo-classic building called the ‘Phoenix’.

Although DSC is a Dutch student oriented society . Dutch royal family members, like Prince Friso, were once DSC members – DSC has 22 sub-clubs, eight of which are now open to international students. The following is a short introduction of the eight sub-clubs that DSC welcomes foreign students to join.

Delftsche Studenten Aeroclub (gliding)

This is the oldest gliding club in the Netherlands and by far the most active one. The clubs five modern gliders are used for training as well as for presentation flights: DG-500 Elan Trainer, Janus C, Astir Jeans, LS-3 and a Discus CS. They fly at Terlet near Arnhem, which on clear days affords a great view of the Hoge Veluwe. Test flights are provided for beginners, costing 20 euros for one flight or 50 euros for five flights.

Apollo student orchestra

The ‘Apollo Orchestra’ has existed for more than 155 years. Highlights from the past were concerts by famous musicians and composers like Jaap van Zweden, Nobuko Imai and Floris Mijnders. Apollo organizes evenings for its members to practice in smaller groups or solo in its own rehearsal room, which has a piano and several other instruments, as well as the largest privately-owned sheet music collection in the Netherlands. Each December Apollo gives a small concert called the ‘Heerenconcert’, as well as two or three other large concerts throughout the year.

Caroussel (horseback riding)

Caroussel was founded 125 years ago. Members can learn or improve their horseback riding skills every week at Prinsenstad – Fridays are for beginners and Thursdays for more experienced riders. Every year there are several competitions against other student clubs in either dressage or jumping. Once every two months there are also organized horseback rides through the dunes and on the beach at Noordwijk or Hoek van Holland.

Delftsche Studenten Alpen Club (climbing/skiing)

The Delftsche Studenten Alpen Club (DSAC) organizes adventurous activities like climbing and tour skiing in the Netherlands and also abroad. Every Tuesday night a group of climbers climbs the wall in the Uithof in Den Haag. This training costs 7.50 euros for the whole evening. Throughout the year there are also several climbing weekends in Belgium or France.

Delftsche Studenten Roeivereniging Laga (rowing)

Laga, founded in 1876, is the second oldest student-rowing club in the Netherlands. That rowing is a real student sport has been proved by the success of Laga. Laga members brought back three silver medals from the Olympic Games in Sydney. And The Netherlands’ first gold medal in rowing at the 1900 Olympic Games was won by a team from Laga! Laga offers rowing on two different levels: semi-professional rowing (training up to 5 times a week) and competition-rowing (one or two trainings per week).

Delftsche Studenten Rugby-Club

Founded in 1918, the Delftsche Studenten Rugby-Club (DSR-C) is one of the Netherlands’ oldest rugby clubs. DSR-C has two teams: the first team plays in the second highest class in the Netherlands, while the second team plays in the third class, mostly against other student teams. Either experienced players or beginners are welcome.

Delft Student Surf, Skate & Snowboard Society

The Delft Student Surf, Skate & Snowboard Society (DS5) is a relatively new DSC society. Currently, they are focusing on Kite Surfing. Almost every weekend they go to Oostvoorne and practice there, using their own equipment. An introductory course (all equipment included) costs 20 euros.

IJsclub (ice-hockey)

The IJsclub is an old sub-club and now practices ice hockey as well as speed skating. The club practices on Tuesdays (6 euro). The ice hockey team practices every Monday in Leiden. Experienced players or beginners are welcome.
