Dream Team Epoch has achieved ninth place in the CityLearn Challenge 2022, an artificial intelligence (AI) competition. The students developed a new AI algorithm for smarter energy systems, competing against 110 other teams from around the world.

The CityLearn Challenge revolved around making the best use of green power from solar panels. Artificial intelligence predicts consumers’ energy consumption. The model makes the best choice about storing or using electricity at any time. At the same time, the algorithm takes into account energy prices and greenhouse gas emissions from power generation. The algorithm takes into account energy prices and greenhouse gas emissions from power generation.

In this way, artificial intelligence helps consumers use energy at the lowest price and with the fewest emissions.

Chief Engineer of Epoch, Philip Tempelman: “The biggest challenge was at the start of the competition. For the model, we wanted to use ‘deep reinforcement learning’. This is a technique to use machine learning in a complex environment, such as a power network, to make the optimal choices based on a predetermined reward mechanism. So in this case, the choices are charging or discharging the battery, and the reward mechanism is based on CO2 emissions and price.”

The CityLearn Challenge is a good example of the competitions Epoch participates in. The team always chooses competitions that contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The students thus contribute to sustainability, safety and health.
