Delta and Delft Integraal often write about innovative ideas that offer big promises for the future. But what has happened to such ideas a couple years on? What for instance has happened to the research for non-slippery shoes?

“If it’s up to material science students Joke Westra and
Heleen Schnitger, tripping while walking on elegant shoes will soon be over. They’re looking for material for shoe soles that prevents slipping.”
After Joke Westra slipped again on her stiletto heels on a bridge in Delft, she was very annoyed. Together with another material science student, Heleen Schnitger, she came up with an idea: to research shoes and try to understand how soles could prevent one from tripping. In October 2007 they received a Young Wild Ideas grant of 10,000 euro from the Delft Centre for Materials for their research.
“There had been a lot of research on safety shoes,” Westra says. “But they were all tested for specific environments and situations, like, for example, how shoes react to oil on the floor. But no one comes across those things in real life. We wanted to research what happens when one slips with everyday shoes in an ordinary environment.”
After they received their grant, the first thing Schnitger and Westra did was buy fifty pairs of shoes. “We absolutely love shoes, so that was great, but unfortunately we couldn’t keep any of them for ourselves”, Westra says. They set up a small lab and analysed the shoes. “We wanted to know the characteristics of the materials and how the materials behaved. To do this we cut all the left shoes to pieces”, she explains, still with pain in her heart.
They also tested several kind of shoes, from sneakers to stiletto’s, on eight different kinds of surfaces, including asphalt, tiles and carpets. “The shoes reacted differently on the surfaces. It could happen that one shoe would not slip on one surface, but would make one trip almost instantly on another. We found that Converse All Stars did very well in the tests, although we also conducted a survey in which lots of responses said that when it rains they are worthless.”
When the funding ran out in 2008, their research stopped. Unfortunately, they did not find the ultimate slippery-free sole. “That wasn’t our main objective, because we would’ve needed a lot more research and money to focus on that”, says Westra, who now works on solar cells as a PhD student (Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science).
Westra does have some tips, however. “When you buy a shoe, make sure it fits well”, she says. “If you slip, you’ll try to correct your posture. If the shoe fits well, you’ll be less likely to trip. It’s also important to replace soles after some time. That’s what I eventually did with the stiletto’s that made me slip. After that the slipping stopped.”
Onder de naam PopHotSpot organiseren de horecazaken aan de Grote Markt in Den Haag en poppodium Paard van Troje gedurende het hele jaar optredens. De liveoptredens in juni zijn de slagroom op de taart. Het centrum van Den Haag staat de hele maand in het teken van The Hague Festivals: een reeks van twaalf miniconcerten.
Tot en met 27 juni is er een vol programma. Op donderdag 18 juni treden The Opposites en L4 op. The Opposites is een Nederlands rapduo, bestaande uit rappers Willy en Big 2. Dit duo werd onder andere bekend met de nummers ‘Wat Wil Je Doen’ en ‘Dom, Lomp en Famous’. Daarnaast treedt L4 – Looking 4ward – op. Dit is een nieuwe Nederlandse hiphopformatie. The Hague Festivals is voor de Haagse DNA, Stamina en Mic-Nif een thuiswedstrijd waar ze kunnen laten zien waar ze voor staan.
Op vrijdag 19 juni staat de avond in het teken van jazz. De Club van Rome treedt op met onder andere Yuri Honing. Honing is één van Nederlands bekendste saxofonisten. In 2001 won hij de prestigieuze Edison Jazz Award. Daarnaast treedt Lady Linn op. Deze Belgische jazz zangeres heet eigenlijk Lien de Greef en treedt op met haar repertoire dat voornamelijk uit ouderwetse Swing Jazz bestaat.
De sfeer op zaterdag 20 juni zal weer compleet anders zijn, met optredens van The Upsessions en Def P & The Beatbusters. The Upsessions is een Nederlandse reggae en ska band die is opgericht in 2005. Ze speelden al op veel internationaal bekende skafestivals en doen dit jaar Nederland weer aan. Def P is pseudoniem voor Pascal Griffioen, de voorman van de voormalige Amsterdamse hiphopgroep Osdorp Posse. Met de Betuwse ska-band Beatbusters scoorde hij in 2002 een hit met het nummer ‘Bubbelbad’. Nu staan zij weer samen op het podium.
Dit alles is slechts een greep uit de grote hoeveelheid optredens. Zo staat op dinsdag 23 juni de burgemeester van Den Haag achter de draaitafels tijdens het programmaonderdeel ‘Wethouders Draaien Door’. Ook treedt het internationaal bekende dance duo Kraak en Smaak op donderdag 25 juni op. Kijk voor een volledig programma van The Hague Festival op de website van PopHotSpot.
