Changed name? Then you can get a new diploma

From now on if you change your name, you can get a replacement diploma. This is stated in a bill on higher education that the Dutch Parliament is expected to approve this week. In principle, university or college of higher education diplomas are only awarded once. In case of loss or theft, you cannot get a replacement certificate. Until now there was one exception. Since 2011, if you undergo a gender transition you can get a replacement certificate with your new name. Several universities and colleges of higher education also want the possibility to replace the original certificate when former students change their names, writes Minister of Education Van Engelshoven in her explanation to the bill. This is already being done in secondary education, and will soon also be done in higher education.
