Twenty-five contestants whizzed over the asphalt of the open-air cycling track in Rijswijk last Sunday. They competed for various titles at the Dutch Student Championships Skating 2000.
Considering the distances that had to be covered, skating can be compared best with short track. Except for sprinting (300, 500 en 1500 meter), also team racing and marathons (66 of 84 km) are scheduled. There were also prizes available for the winner of the classification by points.

The rowing eight’s of Delft introduced themselves convincingly at the ninth Delft Regatta last Saturday. The men’s team won the rowing race over 2000 meter, the TU ladies came in second.

The performances of the Olympic rowers are precisely monitored in Delft. In the semifinals the members of the Delft rowing club Laga wore their digger hat-replica’s.

No injuries for the contestants of the skating championship, this time. Bas Dijkgraaf, organiser: “Normally, things can go wrong during sprinting with all it’s rough elbowing and stuff, but because of the compulsory helmets, nothing terrible happened. When people fall only knees and wrists are vulnerable. That’s why many people ware kneepads and wrist protection.”

Gradually, skating is becoming a serious sport. By applying specific techniques like the ‘double push’ (with an extra push in every stroke you can go faster) skating teachers can stay ahead of their rivals using traditional techniques.

Ernst Ferro sleeps underneath his own home made mosquito net. On the walls are drawings he made himself, graduation projects from secondary school. Most of the rubbish in Ferro’s room has no function whatsoever. The telephone hanging from his bed contains no wiring and the VCR in a corner of his room is erupting tape.
