Biggest student cities will not manage with new construction only
The Netherlands’ six largest student cities warn that they cannot solve the housing problems of students with new construction alone. Among other things, they want a cap on the inflow of international students.
According to the so-called G6 municipalities – the six major student cities being Amsterdam, The Hague, Eindhoven, Groningen, Rotterdam and Utrecht – “there is no way to build” against the growing number of internationals. The target numbers for new construction in the National Student Housing Action Plan 2022-2030, presented in September, cannot be met by most municipalities, they write, given the huge housing needs of other target groups as well.
The six municipalities are asking the Minister of Education, Culture and Science for instruments that will allow higher education to regulate the ever-growing influx of international students. From the housing minister, they want him to adjust the rules for housing valuation and rent allowances. If occupants of non-self-contained rooms also receive rent allowance, rents can go up so that new construction of these rooms becomes more attractive. (HOP, HC)
