Last week, the European Rail Research Advisory Council announced that Dr Chen Shen won the award for Best PhD Thesis in the field of railway research in Europe. The prize is awarded to encourage research on advancing railways in Europe.
Dr Chen Shen completed his PhD in 2023 at the Railway Engineering section of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences. His thesis, Vibration-based railway track condition monitoring, describes the development of a physics-based computer model (a digital twin) of a railway system. The model helps researchers identify key features in measurement data and how both data and models can be used in parallel to gain meaningful insights.
Not the first time
It’s not the first time that TU Delft’s Railway Engineering section has won this award, says Dr Alfredo Núñez Vicencio. A member of the section himself, he tipped off Delta about the award. Vicencio points to Professors Rolf Dollevoet and Zili Li as exceptionally successful PhD supervisors. Their PhD candidates have now received this prestigious thesis award three times. For them, Dr Chen Shen’s win is the third in a row.
