The best Delft start-up idea: a facial wash

What is the most profitable application of a new technology involving nanobubbles? According to Delft students it is a luxury facial wash. They gave the best final presentation in front of an expert jury and won the Turning Technology into Business competition.

The winning ‘Nanobubble’ group developed a commercial strategy for “a luxury facial wash with nano-sized air bubbles, which has deep cleaning, moisturising and sterilising qualities, without added chemicals. The facial wash has also proven to be safe for human skin,” says student Lina Afriana.

According to Patricia Osseweijer, one of the three jury members of the Turning Technology into Business competition, the ‘Nanobubble’ group stood out because its presentation was mostly focused on the needs of users. “They took the standpoint of the customer throughout their presentation, more so than other groups, which is important in this course. Also, they demonstrated knowledge of the whole process chain and had a well-thought out ‘ideation’ process (generating a wealth of ideas through brainstorm sessions or mind maps, for example, ed.). Their choice of cosmetics was novel, well-argued and even their finances were mostly in order.”

The jury was formed by Patricia Osseweijer (full professor and section leader of Biotechnology & Society), Hans Wamelink (dean of the Faculty of Technology, Policy & Management) and Rob Mudde (professor of Chemical Engineering and Applied Physics). The presentations covered a variety of new technologies, such as a steerable needle based on a wasp’s ovipositor to be used for medical purposes and a biobased Super Absorbing Polymer, which can be used in the cut flower industry. In the end, however, the jury decided that the facial wash presentation was the most convincing.
