Attention, apply for the basic grant yourself!

Attention, apply for the basic grant yourself!

From 19 June, students will have to apply to DUO for the basic grant themselves if they are entitled to it. They will not receive it automatically. After all, it is a ‘loan’, which is only waived if students graduate within ten years. With a campaign and letters, student finance provider DUO will bring this to their attention.

From September, students can receive a basic grant again, after it has been gone for eight years. The amount is 110 euros per month for students living at home and 275 euros per month for students living away from home. The latter group will also receive an additional 164 euros next academic year due to high inflation. Students are entitled to a basic grant for the ‘nominal’ duration of their education. If your education lasts four years, you are entitled to four years of basic grant. Senior students have to deduct earlier years of study.

The ministry estimates that 435 thousand students can use the new basic grant, including some 124 thousand first-year students. (HOP, BB)
