“Woman, you need some girlfriends!” my man likes to say whenever I start blabbering away about my recently favorite makeup product or sit him down for a show-and-tell from my latest shopping trip.
And I realize that he is right: my girlfriends would never make help-me-I-am-dying faces while I talk about makeup or nearly burst into tears with gratitude when I switch to another subject. It’s not only guys who have trouble finding female company in Delft; the reserves are so scarce girls have to stick together to maintain a semblance of healthy female ompanionship throughout their student years.
Delft cultivates the healthiest female friendships imaginable. Firstly, there is no competition for guys among the ladies, secondly, the girls can relate to each other as even the most average-looking girls will have admirers, and thirdly, all of that attention makes the ladies more confident in their skins, and hence less bitchy to one another. Having lots of guy friends is fun, but at times every girl needs a breather from beer, pizza, and stupid jokes, to talk about sex, lipstick, and stilettos. So girls seek each other out, which in Delft is no easy task. We form tight bonds with our closest lady friends and then recruit more girls to expand the circle: if one of us meets a nice girl, we invite her to an outing to introduce her to the group. Some girls stick with the group, others don’t, but eventually we scrape together a tightly-knit tribe to do fun girly things with, or to rely on in times of need. We may not spend too much time together on a daily basis, but coming together occasionally for a girl’s night can be so rewarding: females bond in ways that males never do, and let’s face it, when things with Mr. Right don’t work out, you will always call on your girls for support.
Vorige week uitte werkgeversvoorman Bernard Wientjes van VNO-NCW in het Financieele Dagblad zijn zorgen over het nieuwe innovatiebeleid. Natuurlijk stelt hij het op prijs dat het kabinet de vennootschapsbelasting verlaagt en de fiscale voordelen voor research & development (R&D) uitbreidt, maar hij vindt het jammer dat hiervoor gerichte subsidies moeten sneuvelen. Er mag wat hem best iets op bezuinigd worden, maar het kabinet moet waken voor ‘hakken om het hakken’.
Waardering
Verhagen is niet onder de indruk, blijkt uit zijn antwoord op kamervragen. Hij waardeert de betrokkenheid van Wientjes zeer, schrijft hij. En dat het bedrijfsleven hecht aan het innovatiebeleid van EL&I “beschouw ik als een blijk van waardering”.
Belofte
Maar hij keert vooralsnog niet op zijn schreden terug. Hij legt nog eens uit dat de bezuinigingen op de innovatiesubsidies ten goede komen aan het bedrijfsleven, dat daardoor zelf meer budget krijgt voor R&D. Wel belooft hij met alle partijen te praten bij het uitwerken van de kabinetsplannen, dus ook met VNO-NCW. Maar dat was hij al van plan.
