1.6 million people now have study debt in The Netherlands
A record number of 1.6 million people had student debt in the Netherlands at the beginning of this year. Their average debt has not increased and remains at 15.2 thousand euro.
This year, over 100 thousand more people have a student debt than in the previous year, Statistics Netherlands reports. This is probably because more young people went to university in the ‘corona year’ 2020. The graduation rate in secondary education was high and fewer young people took a gap year.
The average student debt has increased from 12.4 thousand euros in 2015 to 15.2 thousand euros in early 2020. The fact that the amount has not risen further since then may be due to government support measures, such as halving tuition fees.
