‘Student data safe in US cloud’

Personal and study data of many Dutch students are stored in data centres of American tech companies. According to the Dutch cabinet, measures have been taken to prevent leaks.

According to a recent study, three quarters of the personal data of Dutch students are stored in clouds of US companies such as Microsoft and Amazon. In principle, there is little wrong with that, states State Secretary for Digitalisation Alexandra van Huffelen in her answer to CDA parliamentary questions. She does not actually see it as her responsibility, as universities and colleges must manage the data themselves according to the Privacy Act (AVG).

Dutch universities and colleges cooperate in assessing the security of software products and clouds. In those cases, this assessment, the Data Protection Impact Assessment, is coordinated by SURF, the ict association for education and research.

Things are different for Google, Van Huffelen now reports. Especially the way the company handles metadata is said to have dangers. According to her, agreements have now been made to reduce privacy risks. (HOP, PvG)
