Action against cigarette butts on campus
Members of staff association Prometheus have started an action against cigarette butts lying around. On the smoke-free campus, smoking is surprisingly common, judging by the proceeds.

Following an appeal in the Prometheus newsletter, more than 50 member signed up for the clean-up action. On Tuesday 24, Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 October, in varying compositions, they sacrificed their lunch breaks to remove cigarette butts around the aula and the TU Delft Library. This has already yielded three filled rubbish bags.
On Friday 27 October, the cleaners are active around the faculties 3mE and EEMCS. Next week, the cleaners will start working around the faculties TPM, AE, CEG and the RID (reactor institute). Prometheus will then make the final assessment.
The staff association started the action to assist a colleague cleaning up around the aula. A frustrating job, says Prometheus manager Jackie Frew, now also from personal experience. “The next day, there are new cigarette butts.”
The clean-up is done with the knowledge of the Directorate of Campus Real Estate & Facility Management (CREFM). Frew hopes the action will help raise awareness among staff and students. After all, smoking has been banned from the campus since 2020 and cigarette butts cause environmental damage. (SB)
