Amounts of energy support for ‘block connection’ known

The government mitigated the impact of high energy prices for citizens with a ‘price cap’ and a one-off allowance of twice 190 euros. But tenants who all share one connection – such as students – risked not benefiting.

In November, Minister Jetten decided that they too would be helped. On Wednesday, he announced the amounts. Tenants of ‘independent’ flats with a block connection for both gas and electricity will receive at least 1598 euros, students without their own front door 670 euros.

Owners or managers of housing complexes with block connection will probably be able to apply for the money in two rounds from the Tax Office from February. Student housing providers are still considering how and when exactly they will offset the amounts against monthly service charges. Depending on the development of energy prices, the amounts might go up slightly in the second round.

The government had already indicated in December that households with block connections will also be compensated for the missed one-off allowance of twice 190 euros. If they have block electricity then tenants of self-contained housing units will receive 380 euros. For non-independent units, that amount is likely to be lower. (HOP, PvT)
