Exchange scholarship for Caribbean students in progress
It is sometimes difficult for students from Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten to come to the Netherlands for an education or exchange. Therefore, there will be a ‘kingdom scholarship’, similar to the scholarships of the European Erasmus programme. The plan had been announced earlier and is now being confirmed. It happened during Minister Dijkgraaf’s annual four-country consultations in the Caribbean part of the kingdom.
“A student from Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten or the BES islands (Bonaire, Saba, Sint Eustastius) can now go to all European countries except the Netherlands with an Erasmus+ scholarship,” a statement read. “The four countries want to rectify this situation.” The kingdom scholarship should enable mobility in vocational secondary education, higher education, and university.
Another agreement has been reached: for a better transition to college or university education, the four countries want to combine initiatives for a ‘pre-academic year’ and further develop them into a ‘Caribbean academic orientation year’.
The idea is that the three universities in the Caribbean will offer a joint preparatory programme, “where desired in cooperation with Dutch colleges and universities”. Secondary education in those parts of the kingdom should also be strengthened to improve the transition to further education. (HOP, BB)
