Saskia van Heumen TU Delft Best Graduate
Saskia van Heumen (clinical technology, Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering) was voted TU Delft’s Best Graduate 2022 on Wednesday. Her research on the use of LED photoacoustics in medical imaging could significantly improve the lives of patients suffering from severe lymphoedema.
Robbe Mudde, vice rector magnificus and chairman of the jury, called Van Heumen’s work ‘a wonderful example of the contribution that clinical engineers can make. It embodies our mission to create impact for a better society’.
For Van Heumen herself, the award is the icing on the cake. “I did not expect to win,” she said in her thank-you speech. “Without the support of my friends and family, I would not have succeeded.”

The TU Delft Best Graduate Award Ceremony is organised every year by the Delft University Fund. The award ceremony took place in the Aula where the eight best graduates (one from each faculty) presented their thesises. Not all graduates were physically present, so some presented their research via Zoom. (MvdV)
