Protest against gas extraction Wadden Sea

Scientists from Scientist Rebellion will protest against gas drilling under the Wadden Sea in The Hague on Wednesday 28 September. The government will soon decide on a new permit for gas drilling under the Wadden Sea.

University of Twente assistant professor Guus Dix is one of the scientists who has joined the movement. He says: “The gas is not going to keep us warm this winter as it can only be pumped up years later, it threatens a nature reserve that is invaluable for humans and animals and it goes against the call of the UN and the International Energy Agency not to build new fossil fuel infrastructure.”

• The demonstration will start at 4 PM and will be held in front of the Ministry of Economy and Climate (Ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat).

Scientist Rebellion is a sister movement of Extinction Rebellion. The international movement includes scientists who are deeply concerned about the climate and ecological crisis and believe that the scientific community has a responsibility to step forward and join the forefront of the climate movement.

A week ago hundreds of Dutch scientists wrote a letter warning about the risk of gas drilling in the Wadden Sea. The letter was also signed by Delft scientists, including professors Susan Steele-Dunne and Peter Herman (both of Civil Engineering and Geosciences), Jan van Neerven (Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science) and Jo Geraedts (Industrial Design Engineering).
