TU Delft top athletes had a good summer

A gold medal for sailing, silver and bronze for rowers, and a fabulous substitution by a football player. TU Delft athletes were very visible this summer among Europe’s top.

The month of July started with a gold medal for sailor Annette Duetz in the 49er FX class. The master student of Applied Sciences won the medal with her new sailing partner Odile van Aanholt at the European championship in Aarhus. The pair hope to compete in the Olympic Games in France in two years time. For Duetz, who won bronze in Tokyo with her previous partner Annemiek Bekkering, this would be the third Olympic Games in a row.

Victoria Pelova impressed the crowds at the European Championships in England

International footballer, Victoria Pelova (Applied Mathematics) impressed everyone at the European Championships in England in July in the decisive pool match against Switzerland. As a substitute for Jill Roord, the student scored the decisive 3-1 halfway in the second half, in the 89th minute, and a little later, set up the fourth goal scored by Romée Leuchter.

The reward came with a starting place in the quarter finals against France in Rotherham. After extra time, the Oranje Leeuwinnen lost the match and were eliminated.

Rowers
The Dutch rowing team won a lot of metal at the European Championship in Munich in mid-August. Four boats that won medals were associated with TU Delft. Laga rowers Ralf Rienks and Tessa Dullemans both won silver in the men’s four and the women’s quadruple sculls.

The women’s double sculls was a TU Delft affair. Roos de Jong of Proteus-Eretes and Laila Youssifou of Laga finished seven seconds behind the winning Romanian double scull, but just beat the German team to win silver. The pair had previously triumphed at world cup competitions in Belgrade and Poznan.

At the European Championships, the pair were also part of the women’s eight that had to drop out of the battle for silver (Great Britain) and gold (Romania). The team rowed over the finish at a suitable distance, winning bronze.
