This morning, a deadly terrorist attack tore through the heart of Brussels. At least 30 people were killed in the departure terminal of the city’s main international airport and in a centrally-located subway station.
According to TU Delft press officer Karen Collet, three students and two staff members from the university were in Brussels this morning but they are all safe and were not injured. Collet and her colleagues were unable to provide any further details.
During a press conference this afternoon, Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte decried the incident and described it as “a direct attack on our freedom, our security and our way of life.” He announced that security measures have been increased at airports and major railway stations across the country. Surveillance has also been boosted along the Netherlands’ border with Belgium and additional patrols are taking place on international trains.
Suspicious activity was reported at Amsterdam Centraal and Hoofddorp railway station earlier today. Both were briefly evacuated but authorities say that both incidents amounted to little more than ‘false alarms.’
