[Poetic Engineering]: Life Cycle Clothing

Natascha van der Velden wrote ‘Making fashion sustainable – the role of designers’.
This dissertation triggered Bauke Steenhuisen to write the following sonnet.

(Closure of offtakes in Bangladesh, uuid:691dbc0b-a713-4f29-9354-202c713cc4bc)

Fashion and sustainability

are worlds apart. With pride we wear a suit

close to our heart, whereas it will pollute

the earth, this exploitative industry.

Fashion, stand for your identity

and change, in order for the world to stay

as lovely and enchanting as it may.

Designers, bear responsibility.

Are you sceptic still and think: who cares…

if clothes are knit or weaved and glued or sewed?

Well then this news will catch you unawares:

Life cycle studies (LCA) have showed

to knit or weave is more than splitting hairs

to weave has twenty times a higher load.
