In the Monaco Offshore Challenge, the TU Delft Solar Boat team will sail on open sea instead of on inland water like canals and lakes. Open sea means rough weather and bigger waves. That’s why this year’s team needs to design a much sturdier, bigger boat. But that’s not the only difference. Last year, the boat was built for one person. This year the boat needs to carry three people.
The Solar Boat project gives a team of 24 students the opportunity to learn and develop sustainable technologies. In just one year, they will design and build a new Solar Boat which will sail purely on solar energy. The goal of the 2018 Solar Boat team was to win the Solar Sport One competition. To this end, they focused on three aspects: efficiency, manoeuverability, and reliability. By working together closely, they managed to complete the race and finish second in the world championship.
Team 2019’s goal is to win the Monaco Offshore Energy class. Their tactics? Look at what was done well in previous years and incorporate these into a new and improved Solar Boat.
