‘More internationals to go elsewhere in the EU’
Other European member states should offer more education in English to attract international students, writes Dutch Education Minister Dijkgraaf to the European Commission. He hopes there will be more ‘balance’ then.
The growth of international students in the Netherlands is leading to concerns about education funding, declining accessibility for Dutch students and a shortage of student accommodation. This is Dijkgraaf’s conclusion in a position paper to the European Commission.
Part of the solution, he says, lies in Europe. Some countries might well need international students, but offer little English-spoken courses. He hopes they will start to change this and thus unburden popular countries like the Netherlands.
Earlier, he shared his own plans to get a grip on internationalisation. For instance, foreign students would have to learn some Dutch. There could also be a numerus fixus for English-language pathways within a programme. (HOP, PvT)
