Hackers receive no payment from Leiden University
A server of the Leiden Observatory has been hacked. Probably by Russian hackers, reports Algemeen Dagblad. They are said to have ‘passed on or sold’ home addresses and research data to the Iranian Arvin Club.
The latter has since published some of the data. If the university is not prepared to pay 16 bitcoins (over 450 thousand euros), more information will be put online. A spokesperson for Leiden University tells AD that it will not meet the demands. The risk of identity fraud would be small and the stolen research data are not confidential.
There is no question of a ransomware attack, as in December 2019 at Maastricht University. In that case, computer systems are encrypted by criminals and the owners only gain access again if they pay a ransom. (HOP, HC)
