Student strike on 3 June

Students are going out on strike on June 3, according to the Dutch Student Union (LSVb) and trade union FNV Young & United. They want the basic grant to be returned and full compensation for the ‘unlucky students’ who never received the basic student grant from 2015.
Under the motto #nietmijnschuld, the unions have been campaigning against the loan system for months. They organised protest meetings in six student cities. The now announced ‘operation formation’ focuses on the political parties that will negotiate a new coalition agreement.
The first students in the new loan system will not receive a basic student grant, but will receive a study voucher of two thousand euro for extra training after graduation. The activists find this “completely insufficient”. The unions call on all students to sign an online petition (in Dutch) and to join a national strike on 3 June. According to LSVb president Lyle Muns it is now or never: “This is our chance to abolish the loan system and come up with a good alternative. The money is being distributed now. (HOP, Hein Cuppen)
