Many freshmen still expected
On the threshold of the summer holidays, pre-registrations at universities and colleges are still high. The corona crisis isn’t changing this for the time being. This is evident from the latest figures from universities and colleges of higher education. The universities have 6.6% more pre-registrations than this time last year. The universities of applied sciences have 3% more.
The corona restrictions may mean that international students in particular may not show up when the new academic year starts. This will mainly affect the universities as they attract more international students than the universities of applied sciences.
However, the pre-registrations do reflect a trend. Young people still know where to find higher education. In times of crisis, a gap year apparently seems less attractive than a full study programme. (HOP, Bas Belleman)
