Free preparation for teacher training

To deal with the shortage of science teachers, the 11 Dutch science faculties are joining forces: they are providing free foundation university teacher training courses. A mechanical engineer, for example, cannot simply start the university teacher training course in physics because he or she has not studied physics and therefore needs to learn. The universities now want to remove that first hurdle: prospective teachers can now expand their prior knowledge free of charge. The universities are even talking of ‘free retraining’ for prospective beta (sciences) teachers, but it is actually a kind of pre-master under the name Beta4all. Once they have the required knowledge, students can start their university teacher training. They do have to pay tuition fees for the teacher training as usual. (HOP)
