12 million euros in fines
Last year, students paid 12 million euros in fines for late termination of their public transport student card, writes Minister Van Engelshoven to parliament. That’s a lot, but it’s less than in previous years. For years, students paid high fines if they forgot to stop their student travel product: 97 euros per half month. It happened to one in three students. In 2014, fines totalled 53 million euros, after which it fell steadily to 33 million euros in 2018 and suddenly to 12 million euros last year.
A reconstruction (in Dutch) showed that the public transport companies did their utmost to maintain and even increase the fines. In the end, however, politics did not take it anymore. Students can now no longer be fined if they have not used their card at all. (HOP/Bas Belleman)
