The Schoof Government is not going to give shared student rooms a rent allowance. Housing Minister Mona Keijzer says that it is too expensive and difficult to implement.
For years, voices have been calling for students in shared housing to also receive a rent allowance. Their high monthly costs would then go down and student housing companies would build more shared housing.
Since the rent subsidy for room renters was abolished in 1997, expensive independent studios with their own kitchen and sanitary facilities have mainly been built. Since residents qualify for rent subsidy, this is more lucrative: owners can then charge more rent for them.
Minister Mona Keijzer (BBB, one of the political parties) is not keen on rent allowance for student rooms. She estimates the costs at between EUR 925 million to EUR 1.3 billion per year, she writes to the Lower House, which the Cabinet currently states it has no money for.
