News in Brief

Mort is a dreamy guy “who couldn’t find his arse with both hands.” Nobodywants to train him or give him a job, but then Death makes him in apprentice.

He cleans

the stables of Death’s flying horse and keeps Death company while Death is working: helping people to the other world when they are killed by the stroke of a scythe, for example. One day, Mort takes over Death’s work (Death needs a break), and then everything goes wrong….

Mort is performed in English by BAM (peasants as puppets). Mort is Terry Pratchett’s 4th Discworld novel and is adapted for the stage by Stephen Briggs

Mort: March 18, 21:00, at the Koornbeurs. In English. Admission:

2 euros. www.koornbeurs.nl

Poor English

Universities in non-English-speaking countries are offering more and more

courses in English. Levels of proficiency in English are therefore slowly improving.

However, proficiency levels for native English-speakers are sharply declining.

English-speaking students (British, Americans, Canadians and Australians) have difficulty expressing themselves in writing because they rely

too much on computer spelling checkers and other computer programs. This is

the conclusion of a study by 42 language experts, published in the British newspaper, ‘The Guardian’. The experts, mainly English teachers, conclude that command of

English has drastically decreased over the past ten years. Bethan Marshall, of King’s College in London, believes this is also a result of the conservative character of the English language. Marshall: ,,The spelling is rarely changed, unlike in, for example, German, where words are changed if people regularly get the spelling wrong.”
