News in brief

Kidnapper caughtAt Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio, police overpowered a 62-year-old former student who was holding 93 people hostage.

The standoff with the police lasted seven hours, which the police say was partly caused by the complex interior architecture of the university building, which was designed by the famous architect, Frank Gehry. During the hostage-taking incident, the kidnapper, dressed in camouflage clothes and armed with two automatic weapons, shot a 30-year-old student dead. Two other university employees suffered minor gunshot wounds. The hostage-taker, who was originally from Calcutta, India, was apparently engaged in long-running feud with a female employee of the university computer department. He accused her of deleting his website, which was specially made for Indian students. Prior to the hostage-taking incident, a court had ruled that this accusation was false. The police believe that this may have been a motive in the crime.

Computer fatigue

Scientists in North Korea have managed to develop a medicinal drink for computer fatigue. This was announced by the official press agency KCNA last Friday. Researchers at the Institute for Plants Science claim that the “mental and visual stress” of computer users is significantly reduced after drinking this special potion. Details of this discovery remain vague. Reports only state that the drink is made from “the fruits of a tree” and that it has a “good taste”. Computers are rare in North Korea. Even the official press agency (whose top daily story, everyday, is: ‘Kim Il Jung praised’) has its Internet address in Japan.
