Digital logic possible with nanotubes The research group of Prof. Cees Dekker has successfully produced a chip with several logic circuits, using carbon nanotube molecules. The nanotubes behave similar to conventional silicon transistors at room temperature, but are much smaller.
The researcher made an invertor, which transforms a logical 0 into a logical 1 and a logical NOR, in which two tubes lay parallel to each other. The output of such a switch is only a logical 1 when both inputs are a logical 0. Furthermore, the researchers made small memory cells.
Berkhout stays at TU Delft
Professor Guus Berkhout, who resigned as member of the board of TU Delft in the spring, has decided to continue working for TU Delft. He accepted a position as fulltime professor at the faculty of Technology, Policy and Management. One of his tasks will be to found an education and research institute together with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in Boston, called Sustainable Delta Metropolis.
Honorary doctorates for Eigler and De Neufville
Dr. Don Eigler from IBM Almaden Research Centre and Prof. Richard de Neufville from MIT will be rewarded with honorary doctorate degrees during the celebrations marking the TU Delft’s birthday on January 11th. Eigler is a pioneer in nanotechnology, especially in the field of building structures from atoms. De Neufville did authoritative work at the interface of technology, system analyses and policy.
