News in Brief

Dutch Olympic rowers use TU’s speedstripsThe Dutch rowers in Sydney have speedstrips attached to their oars to reduce air resistance. In speed skating the same sort of strips, which were developed at the TU Delft, have already proven their effectiveness.

The resistance rowers experience is only twenty percent due to air, so the advantage will be less than with speedskating. The Olympic Games in Sydney and tests in wind tunnels will reveal if the strips really help reducing time.

One and a half million guilders for online campus

The board of directors of the TU has reserved one and a half million guilders to supply students with their own personal portal on Internet. By applying this idea, which was put forward by the student council, students will be able to surf for information on lectures, a survey of their own courses, personal exam results, schedules and a possible online evaluation of teaching. The TU hopes to lead the way in the Netherlands with this ‘online campus’.
