Delft artists: up close and personal

The Foundation for Art Delft’s ‘Atelierroute’ (Artist Studios Tour) is a unique chance to enter Dutch artist studios and meet the artists themselves. The tour starts with an exhibition at Delft’s ‘De Sigarenfabriek’ Gallery, from where visitors then follow a route map to various artist studios throughout the city.

The history of Delft’s ‘De Sigarenfabriek’ Gallery typifies the Dutch cooperative spirit: in September 1993 several local artists decided to create their own art library. To turn dreams into a reality though, they needed a gallery space. They found one: a rundown bicycle shed on the ‘Doelenplein’, which th ey renovated and opened as a gallery in 1995, to serve as stage for presenting young Delft artists to the public.

From this, the Foundation for Art Delft (Stichting Kunstdoelen) was founded. As time passed and membership grew, the foundation started searching for a new location. And this time they found an artist’s dream space for their gallery: a 400m² building just off the Brabantse Turfmarkt that was formerly a ‘Sigarenfabriek’ (Cigar Factory), once employing more people than any other industry in Delft.

Once again, foundation members invested all their time, energy and money into converting this rundown factory building into a vibrant, inspiring art gallery. Today, the Foundation for Art Delft’s ‘De Sigarenfabriek’ Gallery is the creative heart of art in Delft. Since it opened in May 1996, the gallery has flourished, hosting some 15 expositions a year, as well various educational projects for art academies and public schools.
‘Atelierroute’

On October 22-23, the Foundation for Art Delft is organizing the ‘Atelierroute’ (Artist Studios Tour), a special weekend-long event when a variety of Delft artists, from painters to potters, open their studio doors to the public, allowing visitors to see how and where they create their works of art and to meet and talk with the artists themselves.

The ‘Atelierroute’ starts at ‘De Sigarenfabriek’ Gallery with what the organizers call an ‘aperitif’: an exposition entitled ‘De Delftse Salon 2005’, in which 55 artists will display their art works. Among the artists exhibiting are Chung-His Han, who also teaches at the TU’s Cultural Center and whose art has an alluringly dusky, sultry element; Ad Haring, who, inspired by the human body, creates simple figures in grotesque yet interesting forms; and Rik van Hazendonk, an artist and civil engineer whose canvasses capture the beauty of Dutch landscapes.

With ‘Atelierroute’ map in hand, the visitor’s departure from the ‘De Sigarenfabriek’ Gallery marks the start of a fascinating Delft artist studio tour, from studio to gallery, and in and out of many beautiful and strange buildings throughout the city.

Additionally, a further six galleries (Galeries Ariana, Fragile, Lous Martin, Marry Feldmeyer, Meij & Meij OD’Art Gallery) are also participating in the event, with works of art being displayed in shop windows throughout Delft.

All participating artist studios and galleries are located in Delft’s old center, easily reached on foot or by bicycle. The ‘Atelierroute’ is truly special event: a unique opportunity for visitors to meet talented Dutch artists up close and personal, and discover the power of art in Delft.

The ‘Atelierroute’ is on Oct. 22-23, starting at ‘De Sigarenfabriek’ Gallery (Brabantse Turfmarkt 75a) – open from 11:00-17:30. For 5 euro visitors receive a brochure, Artist Studio Route map, and a form for voting for your favorite artist. Your voting form is then entered into a lottery, the winner receiving 500 euro.
