Estimated value of the most promising patents in millions of guilders: About fifteen TU patents must each yield more than three hundred thousand guilders via licenses or sales, according to a British consultancy company.

Annually, the TU spends one million guilders to maintain its ninety patents. But profits resulting from these patents haven’t yet poured in. Nevertheless, TU patents could be worth as much as 18 million guilders, according to Scientific Generics, a British company that was called in a year ago to study the commercial possibilities of the TU’s patents. Scientific Generic compiled a report on the subject. The cost of the report itself: two hundred thousand guilders.
”Quite a number of TU patents appear promising,” concludes André Loos, president of TU’s business service centre. ”However, money is not our only motive for an active patent policy. The use of patents also increases the scientific impact and the TU’s impact on society.”
Scientific Generics calculated a patent’s worth by estimating the market’s demand, the possible market share and the license percentage of the invention. This maximum amount to be earned is then adjusted, after factoring in the risk that the technology won’t work and that the commercial backers might unexpectedly withdraw their support.
About thirty patents seemed to have real commercial possibilities, Loos reports. ”We’ll start with ten of those. We’re already working on business plans for starting a company or a joint venture for three of the most promising patents.”
The potential value of thirty other patents remains uncertain. To provide clarity, a more expensive analysis is needed, costing about fifty thousand guilders. The TU won’t make a penny out of the remaining thirty patents. These should either be sold off cheaply or the patent maintaining payments should be stopped.
