Bah, februari. Echt zo’n net-niet-maand. Kerst- en nieuwjaarsfeestjes voorbij en te vroeg voor de festivals. Maar gelukkig is er het HPC Winterfest.
Ja, oké, we kunnen schaatsen. En de kroeg is altijd open. Maar verlang jij met de zon op je ramen ook niet vreselijk naar het festivalseizoen? Naar dagen in het gras met een biertje, genietend van allerlei bandjes? Dan is het nog een aardige zit tot 6 april, als Paaspop het festivalseizoen weer inluidt. Daarom riep het Haags Pop Centrum in 2007 het Winterfest in het leven, ‘hét festival voor de festivalliefhebbers om de winter door te komen en het gat tussen de festivalseizoenen te dichten’. Er zijn optredens in het HPC Muziekcafé en in de oefenruimtes kun je een kijkje achter de schermen nemen bij verschillende bands. Dit jaar kun je voor het eerst ook naar de Laetitiazaal, onderdeel van Muziekcentrum Loosduinen dat sinds vorig jaar onder het Haags Pop Centrum valt. Op dit unplugged-podium zijn optredens te zien van onder anderen Naked en Le Bike. Het topje van de ijsberg, want in totaal staan twintig bands geprogrammeerd. Een paar namen: The Fudge, Audiodaycare, Dawn Of Time, Anger Radio, Dead Fish FM, Ma’China, Maconics, Deflour en dj Shaft.
Voor de fanatiekelingen is er ook een popquiz en in Café ‘t Anker leidt Vuigtuig een jamsessie. Lekker, al is het maar om je gewoon vast te verheugen op alle festivals die nog op stapel staan.
Toch nog te ver weg allemaal? Muziekcafé De Pater in Den Haag houdt nog steeds elke woensdag Patersessies. In een popworkshop om 19.30 uur leer je alle ins en outs van de hedendaagse popmuziek, en vanaf 23.00 uur staat een ervaren ritmesectie ter beschikking voor aankomend talent. Leuk om aan mee te doen als je muzikale ambities hebt, maar minstens net zo leuk om naar te kijken.

“The worst and best thing about the internet is the information overflow. These days I’m scared to check my mail for fear of all the meetings, gatherings…chaos going on around me. I haven’t been on Facebook in ages, and it’s like I have no idea what’s going on with my friends. But I do love that there’re so many creative blogs out there. I like to get inspiration from these blogs for my industrial design projects. There are some amazingly talented amateur artists, designers, photographers posting their original work online. And such sites inspired me to start my own blog – Funky Colours – four years ago.
Initially I tried making my blog an online magazine, posting interesting articles, links, images…I’d found elsewhere. But nowadays it’s more of my original work – mostly photo-collages and occasional crazy stories. The photographs mainly come from various blogs and flickr albums, which I arrange in certain ways that may seem arbitrary but in reality carries a special meaning: no two images placed next to each other are unrelated. The collage tells a story; the art is in the eye of the beholder.
I blog mostly for fun. In Bulgaria there’s a tightly-knit blogger community where many creative people post their work. It’s great being part of that community. Although I don’t have many followers, I do occasionally get encouragingly positive messages from people reading my blog. Once a girl came up to me at a party and told me she was a fan. Another time some online Japanese magazine posted a link to my blog and I got like 10,000 hits in one day! Occasionally I re-visit my blog posts from four years ago. It’s like a timeline: what I liked back then is completely different from what I like today, so I can see how much I’ve changed.
If the internet suddenly disappeared, I’d find things to do. Probably start planting things in my garden. I recently moved and still don’t have internet access, so I feel as if I’m in some distant village. Yet my flatmates and I nowadays enjoy cooking together and socialising in person. The internet’s a great source of information, but you shouldn’t let it overshadow your real life.”
