NoseThe TU Delft racing team ‘DUT-09’ recently unveiled its new design of this year’s racing cart. Compared to last year’s championship winning car, this year’s model is larger and lighter, says DUT-09 team manager Stef de Jong.

New requirements call for an interior space comparable to Formula 1 racing cars. The new design provides more leg-room for the driver. The cart’s nose has also been raised, and the suspension lowered. The DUT-09 team currently consists of 70 enthusiastic members who work together to produce a newer, better and faster car than the year before. The DUT-09 team competes in the Formula Students championship, which is largest, most successful design competition in the world, with over 400 university student teams participating worldwide. The competition is about designing, building, testing, racing and marketing your own Formula-style racing car. There is also a sustainability aspect: last year’s race-winning DUT-08 cart was powered by bio-ethanol and used 14% less fuel than the cart that finished in second place. TU Delft industrial designers, aerospace engineers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, first-year students, MScs and PhDs all work together on this project. Although the current TU Delft team has its full compliment of team members, team manager De Jong says the team is however always in need of new members who have specialist knowledge of the internal workings of engines. Team DUT-09 can be reached via its website: www.dutracing.nl
