New MSc students are welcomed46 New MSc students arrived in Delft in August to follow a summer school course entitled ‘Human activities in the Delta’.

The summer school is an optional, introductory course, preceding the start of their degree courses, which begin in September. The new students learn about the Dutch education system, experience working in multidisciplinary project groups and learn how to give presentations in English.

Honorary doctorate for Schoonman

The Transilvania University of Braslov, in Romania, has awarded Prof. J. Schoonman an honorary doctorate, presenting him with a special gown and cap during an official ceremony. The TU Delft professor of inorganic chemistry has given lectures in Braslov since 1996 and helped the Romanians set up a thin layer lab. Romanian students and teachers often come to Delft to carry out research projects.

Discount folding bikes for Life Science students

Life Science & Technology students who follow lectures at both TU Delft and the University of Leiden can buy discount folding bikes with ‘very solid locks’ to travel with from the station to the college. Via their faculties, the students need only pay 150 guilders for a bike that is worth about 600 guilders, according to Dr. Piet Bos.

Labour agreement for universities signed

Dutch universities and the unions signed a collective labour agreement in the middle of July after months of talks. The salaries of university employees were raised by 2.8 percent in June 2000, will be raised again by 3.4 percent in July 2001, and by a further 0.8 percent in February 2002. The conditions of employment will become a bit more flexible, but not as much as the universities would have liked.
