Since its launch in 1997, has brought together thousands of students, entrepreneurs and tech titans from all around the world. The 2016 edition will roll into the Jaarbeurs exhibition and convention centre in Utrecht from 25 May to 29 May.
Campus Party is among the biggest in the world and the 2015 event, which was held in Brazil, reportedly attracted over 120,000 visitors. What makes Campus Party so unique is that it never quite stops. Its schedule goes around the clock, 24 hours a day, until the closing event on the final day.
This year’s Campus Party will feature a huge array of lectures, workshops, hackathons, exhibits, cosplay gatherings, drone races and gaming tournaments bound to attract thousands of participants dubbed ‘Campuseros’. The list of keynote speakers includes Nobel Prize winner Dan Shechtman, Matthew Reyes from GoPro NASA and Camille François of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society of Harvard University.
Eibert Draisma is among those who will also be speaking at the event. He’s a Dutch designer, inventor and artist as well as the CEO & founder of Draisma Industrial Design. Over the course of his career, Draisma has created no less than 150 DIY products for Praxis, earned several patents and tutored at the Design Academy Eindhoven. At Campus Party 2016 he plans to discuss the history and poetry of technology, ten reasons why it’s a great time to be an industrial designer and why robots might rule the world someday.
“Stay away from the humdrum,” Draisma said when asked what sort of advice he would give to young designers. “Focus on projects that inspire you to study and learn more about certain issues, perhaps get involved in a particular effort, or begin your own initiative. Reserve enough time for learning by doing, developing yourself along the way.”
One of Draisma’s most recent projects is called ‘Battery Eaters’. These small robots use the remaining energy in old batteries to make their eyes blink. “The average household in the Netherlands has 114 batteries, both in use and ‘empty’. In the US alone, about three billion batteries are sold annually,” he said. “However, did you know that every battery you throw away still contains some power? I think that’s ridiculous. So let’s make use of this remaining energy, create awareness and have fun while we’re doing it!”
